I’m Excited About the Role...When (and How) Should I Follow Up Without Seeming Desperate?

Ah yes, the classic job seeker dilemma:


“I just had a great interview. I’m hyped. I want the role. But if I follow up too soon… do I look desperate?”


Let me stop you right there!





You don’t look desperate when you follow up professionally. You look like someone who’s engaged, intentional, and not here to waste time.


But, there’s a right way, and a thirsty way.

Let’s make sure you’re doing the former.





First Rule of the Follow-Up: Never Chase. Always Confirm.


This isn’t a game of cat and mouse. You’re not chasing them down for validation.


You’re:

  • Reinforcing your value

  • Demonstrating your communication style

  • Keeping your process moving (yes, your process, you’re interviewing them, too)


What you’re not doing:

  • Sending “just checking in 😊” emails every 36 hours

  • Sitting in inbox limbo wondering if you should reach out again

TIMELINE: The Foolproof Follow-Up Flow


Immediately After the Interview (Same Day)


Send a thank-you email. Period.


Keep it short, sharp, and specific:

“Thank you for your time today. I really enjoyed our conversation and learning more about [Company Name]’s [Role/Initiative]. I’m even more excited about the opportunity to contribute to [specific thing you discussed]. Looking forward to next steps.”

Why? You’re fresh in their mind. Strike while the memory’s hot.




Wait 5 Business Days (Unless They Gave a Timeline)


If they said:


“We’ll be in touch by next week.” You wait until next week plus 1 business day before you follow up.

If they didn’t give a timeline, the 5 business day rule is your go-to.


Then send this:

“Hi [Name], just wanted to follow up on our conversation last week. I’m still very excited about the opportunity at [Company], and wanted to see if there’s any update or additional information I can provide. Looking forward to hearing from you.”

Clean. Confident. Non-needy. You're a closer, not a clinger.




Follow-Up #2 – 7-10 Days After That (If No Response)


Still crickets? Time to send a light re-engagement message:


“Hi [Name], I know how busy this season can be! Just circling back to see if the team is still in the decision-making phase. I’m continuing to explore opportunities, but this role remains a top priority for me. Let me know if there’s an update.”

Notice the energy here:

You’re interested, but you’ve got motion.

They don’t think you’re sitting around waiting. They see value + momentum.





Final Ping – 2 Weeks After Your Last Touch



Still nothing? Time for the last, classy tap:


“Hi [Name], just wanted to close the loop on our previous conversations. I appreciated the opportunity to learn more about the team and role. If things move forward, I’d still be happy to connect. Wishing you all the best!”

No hard feelings. No burned bridges. But you’re not leaving your future in ghost hands.




Bonus: Want to Stay on Their Radar Without Pestering?


Here’s a sneaky smart move:


If you see a relevant article, industry trend, or update related to what you discussed:


“Hi [Name], thought of you when I came across this article on [topic]. It ties directly into what we talked about during the interview. Hope all is well!”

You’re staying visible, but through contribution, not neediness.

That’s how you stay top of mind without screaming “Pick me.”
